How Sales People Can Be More Productive Starting Today
Sometimes it really is the little things that make all the difference in the world. If you’re looking for a competitive edge – one that will help you outperform your competitors while keeping your co-workers on their toes - you may not need anything more than a pen and paper.
For the next 5-days challenge yourself to write a top 10 to-do list for each day. Key to success here… don’t over think it. Instead of putting down what you “think” your manager/boss/spouse or anyone else would say should be on the list, simply write down what comes to your mind first. For all you know, you could have “baggage” from personal responsibilities that have been neglected and are interfering (unconsciously) with your ability to get in the “sales zone”.
By creating a new list each day and marking off each item as you accomplish them, not only will you free your mind, but you’ll start to get more done in less time. Before you know it, your sales board will start to have more ink on it.
Here’s a personal example of my top 10 to-do list for today (in no order of importance)
- Listen to Covey’s 7 Habits book on tape on drive to work
- Workout: Run 5k
- Call K. Hourigan back to discuss idea
- Contact Geico
- Make 30 new prospecting calls
- Review / critique P. Clayton's opening value statement
- Register Corning Cables sales team for upcoming seminars
- Write blog post
- Invest one hour "social selling"
- Pay personal trainer bill
It’s important to not get caught up in what order your top 10 list should be done in. Naturally some things may need to happen before the others (like listening to motivational tape on your way to work) but we can get frustrated by trying to prioritize the list and we end up sabotaging ourselves. Just list it out as they come to mind. Once you have it written out, get to work on it. Pick one thing, accomplish it to the best you can and then move on to the next one. As you go through your day, be sure to review your list in order to help you stay on track.
Try this for 5-days in a row and see if you don’t feel better, think clearer and have more energy on the phone while having a better attitude. Higher sales are just around the corner.
